Free Affiliate Marketing Training: How to do Keyword Research Using Free Tools by Henlus
Keyword research involves compiling a list of highly targeted keywords related to your niche and the products you're promoting. This list of keywords will form the basis of your website's content and the link text of your backlinks. Therefore, before you start writing contents for your site, you must do your keyword research first.
Now, how do we get started with keyword research?
You'll need a keyword research tool. There are many keyword research tools available, some are free while others require a monthly fee. Few examples of these tools are:
1. Google Adwords Keyword Tool (Free) adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
2.Free Word Tracker Tool (freekeywords.wordtracker.com)
3. SEO Elite and
4. TrafficTravis
One important thing to take note of while using the Google Adwords Keyword tool is to tick "Exact Match" as your match type. If you don't do this you'll be getting an inflated search volume for your keywords.
During your keyword research, you may decide to use keywords that have about 300 or more monthly searches. You also have to check how competitive the keywords are. Your goal would be to find keywords with moderate or high search volumes and low or moderate competition.
When using the Google keyword tool you'll notice a column that indicates competition. Don't make the mistake of seeing this as the level of organic competition for the keyword because it's not. It is just a metric that shows how many adwords advertisers are competing for the keyword. This metric may also give you an idea of how profitable a keyword is because if many advertisers are competitng for a particular keyword, it then means that that keyword is making them money and vice versa.
To estimate the level of competition in a niche, some people use the number of results a search engine return when they search for their target keywords in quote.
This is wrong because your main competitors are sites that are optimized for the exact keyword you are targeting. You can smoke out these competitors by using the allinttitle, allinurl and allinanchor search query in Google. These queries will bring out your main competitors and this is how you use them:
allintitle: "your target keyword here"
allinanchor: "your target keyword here"
allinurl: "your target keyword here"
Before you panic and throw away a keyword because of the number of search results that comes out, make sure that you smoke out your competitors first using the queries above, then analyze the top 5 or 10 competing pages that appear on the first page of Google. This analysis involves checking for the number and quality (page rank) of back links the competing webpages have and you can do this using backlinkwatch.com.
While analysing the backlink of your competitors, concentrate on those backlinks whose anchor text is the exact keyword you're targeting. Take note of the number and page ranks of such backlinks. This would give you an idea of the number and quality of backlinks you need to outcompete your competitors. If you can build this number of backlinks, then go for the keyword but if you can't, pick another keyword.
By the end of your keyword research, you should be able to compile a list of 10-40 keywords for each product you intend promoting.
Armed with a list of highly targeted keywords (keywords that meet your criteria for traffic and competition), you can then go into the next phase - content writing.
The articles you write should be well optimized with the keywords you're targeting. For every keyword you're targeting, make at least one article out of it and remember to include your keywords in the following location on your web page:
1. In the page title and subtitles (i.e. H1 & H2 tags)
2. Bolded/ italicized/underlined texts
3. In the keyword and description meta tags in your page's source code
4. Link texts (anchor texts)
5. In alt tags for images
6. In the page content (make sure your keywords appear in the first paragraph and several times throughout the article. But do not overdo it because search engines will penalize you. Make your keyword density to be 3-4% ).
N.B: A keyword density of 3-4% means that for every 100 words, your keyword will appear 3-4 times.
It is after your keyword research that you can start writing articles for your site, articles for article directory, articles for free to use websites and so on. It is also important to use your keywords in the anchor text of your back links.
Armed with this two strategies (keyword research and content writing), you can move forward to dominate any niche. Keyword research will help you to find keywords your potential customers are using to find products and services in your niche, content writing will help you to promote affiliate products while offering valuable information to your readers. Content writing also enable you to build back links to your main site from other sites.
